If you’ve been anywhere near a church in Denver, I’m sure you’ve heard about ‘citywide revival’ or ‘transforming the city’. As grandiose as this sounds, what does it practically mean? If you are a businessman or woman, or a stay at home mom, what would transformation look like in Denver through you? If revival was defined as a community saturated with God, what would this mean in your sphere of influence?
What Is Revival?
J.I. Packer describes revival as ‘God’s quickening visitation of His people, touching their hearts and deepening his work of grace in their lives.’ Robert Coleman describes it as ‘the awakening or quickening of God’s people to their true nature and purpose.’ If revival is based on individuals being quickened to their true nature and intended purpose, how should we then walk to bring about this purpose?
The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary’s published work on Theology of Revival defines revival as when God touches a community of faith and when wider society is impacted as a result. The question is, how can individuals in a church impact society if our personal lives don’t bleed over into our community lives?
How We Can Participate
Ephesians 2:10 tells us, ‘For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.’ Most of us recognize that God has called us for what we would call ‘Christian service’. The soup kitchen, Sunday School ministry, volunteering at the local shelter, etc… However, do we consider the passions of our heart to be apart of the ‘good works’ Jesus prepared for us in advance, which, will in turn transform our homes, communities and cities? Take for instance, the arts. Could fulfilling a dream of being an artist be crucial to bringing citywide revival? It actually could be.
The very first person in Scripture who was filled with the Holy Spirit was a craftsman. In Exodus 31:1-5, Bezalel was ‘filled with the Spirit of God in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all kinds of craftsmanship, to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, and in cutting of the stones and carving of wood, that he would work in all kinds of craftsmanship.’ Here we see a man with a passion for creating artistic designs that God used for His glory.
In ‘Dreaming with God’, Bill Johnson states that learning the dreams of God for this world is our beginning place. That includes the dreams of God for inventions, artistic expressions and all areas of our life. Start with the small desires, invite God into them and watch it begin to transform your sphere of influence bringing about Holy Spirit transformation!
